Partial dentures

A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth and clips onto the remaining ones. Acrylic partials are simpler and often used as an interim solution; cobalt-chrome framed partials are thinner, stronger and generally kinder to the remaining teeth.

How we assess whether it's right for you

  • Assessment of remaining teeth, gum health and the shape of the space
  • Design discussion — clasp position, coverage and appearance
  • Comparison with bridge and implant options

Suitability is decided after an examination, not from a photograph or a phone description. If a treatment is not right for you, your dentist will say so and set out what else is available.

What the process involves

  1. 1. Impressions and design

Records taken and the framework designed.

  2. 2. Try-in

Framework fit and tooth position confirmed before finishing.

  3. 3. Fit

Insertion, bite adjustment and cleaning instructions.

  4. 4. Adjustments

Follow-up visits to relieve any sore spots.

Risks and limitations

  • Partial dentures increase plaque retention around the remaining teeth, raising decay and gum disease risk without careful cleaning.
  • Clasps may be visible depending on the design and the position of the teeth.
  • Adaptation takes time, and periodic adjustment, reline or addition of teeth is common.

Alternatives to consider

  • A bridge
  • An implant, by referral
  • Leaving the space where function and appearance are acceptable

Any dental procedure carries risks. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or personal advice. Outcomes vary between people, and suitability can only be determined after an examination by a registered dental practitioner.

What affects the cost

  • Fees depend on the treatment actually required, and are confirmed in a written plan before treatment begins.
  • Acrylic and metal-framed partials are quoted differently. The written plan sets out each laboratory stage.
  • Health fund rebates vary by fund, level of cover and remaining annual limits. We can process claims on the spot with HICAPS where your fund supports it.

Before your appointment

  • What to bring

Your Medicare card, private health fund card, any concession or DVA card, and a list of medicines you take. If you have had recent X-rays elsewhere, bring them or tell us where they were taken.

  • How long it takes

Appointment length depends on what is found at the examination. Reception gives you an estimated time when you book, and your dentist confirms it once the plan is agreed.

  • Nervous patients

Tell reception when you book. Your dentist can explain each step before it happens, agree a stop signal with you, and break treatment into shorter visits.

  • Children and families

Family appointments can often be arranged back to back. Eligible children can be treated under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Partial dentures — questions we're often asked

Acrylic or metal frame?

Acrylic is cheaper and easily added to; a metal frame is thinner, more rigid and usually more comfortable long term.

How do I clean it?

Remove and brush it daily with a denture brush and soap, and clean your natural teeth separately.

Will people see the clasps?

Design can often hide clasps, but not always. Your dentist will show you the planned design first.
