Cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry in Franklin
Cosmetic treatment starts with a health assessment. Decay, gum disease and bite problems are addressed first, because appearance-focused work placed over untreated disease does not last. From there, your dentist explains realistic options, what each involves and where the limits are.

How we assess whether it's right for you
- Examination of teeth, gums and bite, with photographs where helpful
- Discussion of what you would like to change, in your own words
- Written treatment plan setting out sequence, timeframes and costs
Suitability is decided after an examination, not from a photograph or a phone description. If a treatment is not right for you, your dentist will say so and set out what else is available.
What the process involves
1. Consultation
Your concerns, health status and options are discussed. No treatment is booked at this appointment unless you want it.
2. Planning
Records, X-rays where indicated, and a plan with alternatives and costs.
3. Treatment
Staged treatment, starting with health and stability.
4. Maintenance
Review appointments to keep restorations and gums healthy.
Risks and limitations
- Cosmetic results vary between individuals, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
- Some treatments, including veneers and crowns, permanently remove tooth structure.
- Restorations and whitening need maintenance and eventual replacement or top-ups.
Alternatives to consider
- Doing nothing and monitoring
- Conservative options such as whitening or bonding before considering veneers or crowns
- Orthodontic alignment instead of restorative masking
Any dental procedure carries risks. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or personal advice. Outcomes vary between people, and suitability can only be determined after an examination by a registered dental practitioner.
What affects the cost
- Fees depend on the treatment actually required, and are confirmed in a written plan before treatment begins.
- Cosmetic treatment is quoted in writing after consultation, with each stage itemised.
- Health funds generally do not rebate purely cosmetic procedures. Restorative items may attract a rebate.

Before your appointment
What to bring
Your Medicare card, private health fund card, any concession or DVA card, and a list of medicines you take. If you have had recent X-rays elsewhere, bring them or tell us where they were taken.
How long it takes
Appointment length depends on what is found at the examination. Reception gives you an estimated time when you book, and your dentist confirms it once the plan is agreed.
Nervous patients
Tell reception when you book. Your dentist can explain each step before it happens, agree a stop signal with you, and break treatment into shorter visits.
Children and families
Family appointments can often be arranged back to back. Eligible children can be treated under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Cosmetic dentistry — questions we're often asked
Do I need to decide at the consultation?
No. You receive a written plan to consider in your own time.
Can you show me what it will look like?
Photographs, models or mock-ups can help illustrate options, but they are a guide rather than a guaranteed result.
Is cosmetic work covered by my health fund?
Usually not when the purpose is purely appearance. Your dentist can provide item numbers so you can check with your fund.
