Tooth extractions
Extraction is recommended when a tooth cannot be restored predictably, has severe gum disease, or is causing infection that cannot be resolved another way. It is a decision made with you after the alternatives have been explained.

How we assess whether it's right for you
- X-ray assessment of root shape, bone and nearby structures
- Medical history review, including blood thinners and bone medications
- Discussion of replacement options before the tooth is removed
Suitability is decided after an examination, not from a photograph or a phone description. If a treatment is not right for you, your dentist will say so and set out what else is available.
What the process involves
1. Anaesthetic
Local anaesthetic is given and checked before starting.
2. Removal
The tooth is removed; surgical access and stitches are sometimes needed.
3. Aftercare
Written instructions on bleeding, pain relief, diet and what to avoid.
4. Replacement
Denture, bridge or implant referral options are planned if you want the space filled.
Risks and limitations
- Bleeding, swelling, bruising, infection and dry socket can occur.
- Nerve injury causing altered sensation is uncommon but possible, particularly for lower back teeth.
- Bone shrinks after extraction, which affects the appearance and the options for replacement later.
Alternatives to consider
- Root canal treatment and restoration to retain the tooth
- Periodontal treatment where gum disease is the cause
- Monitoring where the tooth is not currently symptomatic
Any dental procedure carries risks. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or personal advice. Outcomes vary between people, and suitability can only be determined after an examination by a registered dental practitioner.
What affects the cost
- Fees depend on the treatment actually required, and are confirmed in a written plan before treatment begins.
- Simple and surgical extractions are quoted differently. Replacement is costed separately.
- Health fund rebates vary by fund, level of cover and remaining annual limits. We can process claims on the spot with HICAPS where your fund supports it.

Before your appointment
What to bring
Your Medicare card, private health fund card, any concession or DVA card, and a list of medicines you take. If you have had recent X-rays elsewhere, bring them or tell us where they were taken.
How long it takes
Appointment length depends on what is found at the examination. Reception gives you an estimated time when you book, and your dentist confirms it once the plan is agreed.
Nervous patients
Tell reception when you book. Your dentist can explain each step before it happens, agree a stop signal with you, and break treatment into shorter visits.
Children and families
Family appointments can often be arranged back to back. Eligible children can be treated under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Tooth extractions — questions we're often asked
Will it hurt?
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Discomfort afterwards is managed with simple pain relief for most people.
How long until I can go back to work?
Many people return the next day after a simple extraction. Surgical removals often need a day or two.
Do I need to replace the tooth?
Not always, but leaving a gap can affect chewing and allow neighbouring teeth to move. Your dentist will explain the trade-offs.
