Orthodontics
Braces
Fixed braces use brackets and wires to move teeth gradually into a planned position. Treatment is used for crowding, spacing, and bite problems, and typically runs over many months to a couple of years.

How we assess whether it's right for you
- Orthodontic examination, photographs, X-rays and scans or models
- Assessment of gum health and decay risk before starting
- Clear advice on whether treatment is suitable in general practice or is better referred to a specialist orthodontist
Suitability is decided after an examination, not from a photograph or a phone description. If a treatment is not right for you, your dentist will say so and set out what else is available.
What the process involves
1. Consultation
Discussion of goals, options, timeframes and costs, in writing.
2. Fitting
Brackets are bonded and the first wire placed.
3. Adjustments
Regular visits, usually every six to eight weeks.
4. Retention
Retainers are essential after treatment and are worn long term.
Risks and limitations
- Decalcification (white marks) and decay can occur where cleaning is poor around brackets.
- Gum inflammation, root shortening and relapse are recognised risks of orthodontic treatment.
- Teeth move back without retainer wear — retention is lifelong, not optional.
- Discomfort for a few days after fitting and after adjustments is normal.
Alternatives to consider
- Clear aligners for suitable cases
- Referral to a specialist orthodontist
- Accepting the current alignment
- Restorative options where only appearance is a concern
Any dental procedure carries risks. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or personal advice. Outcomes vary between people, and suitability can only be determined after an examination by a registered dental practitioner.
What affects the cost
- Fees depend on the treatment actually required, and are confirmed in a written plan before treatment begins.
- Orthodontic treatment is quoted as a full course, often with a payment schedule across the treatment period. Retainers are included or quoted separately in the plan.
- Health fund rebates vary by fund, level of cover and remaining annual limits. We can process claims on the spot with HICAPS where your fund supports it.

Before your appointment
What to bring
Your Medicare card, private health fund card, any concession or DVA card, and a list of medicines you take. If you have had recent X-rays elsewhere, bring them or tell us where they were taken.
How long it takes
Appointment length depends on what is found at the examination. Reception gives you an estimated time when you book, and your dentist confirms it once the plan is agreed.
Nervous patients
Tell reception when you book. Your dentist can explain each step before it happens, agree a stop signal with you, and break treatment into shorter visits.
Children and families
Family appointments can often be arranged back to back. Eligible children can be treated under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Braces — questions we're often asked
How long will treatment take?
It depends on the complexity. Your dentist gives an estimated range at the consultation, and it can change during treatment.
Braces or aligners?
Both move teeth. Fixed braces handle a wider range of movements; aligners are removable and less visible but depend on wearing them 20-22 hours a day.
Do I need a referral?
No, but complex cases are referred to a specialist orthodontist, and we will tell you if yours is one.
