Preparing your child for a first dental visit
What happens at a first visit, and how to prepare without building up nerves.
Before the appointment
- Book a time of day when your child is usually settled.
- Keep language neutral — avoid words like 'hurt', 'needle' or 'drill', even reassuringly.
- Bring a comfort toy if that helps.
On the day
- Younger children are shown the chair and instruments first.
- A gentle count of the teeth, a clean and fluoride if appropriate.
- Nothing is done without explaining it to your child first.
Afterwards
- Any treatment needed is discussed with you, with costs in writing.
- Eligible children may be bulk billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
- Regular short visits build confidence more effectively than waiting until there is a problem.
