Caring for a new crown, bridge or veneer

Practical care advice to help restorations last as long as possible.

Cleaning

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, angling toward the gum line.
  • Clean between teeth daily; use a floss threader or interdental brush under a bridge.
  • Decay can still start at the join between the restoration and the tooth.

What to avoid

  • Biting nails, pens, ice and hard-shelled foods.
  • Using front restorations to tear packaging or thread.
  • Skipping a night splint if one has been recommended for grinding.

Expect and report

  • Mild sensitivity for a week or two after fitting is common.
  • Report a high bite, persistent ache, or any looseness promptly.
  • Restorations are not permanent and will need review and eventual replacement.
