After a tooth extraction
General aftercare guidance for the first few days following an extraction.
First 24 hours
- Bite firmly on the gauze provided for at least 30 minutes.
- Avoid rinsing, spitting and smoking, which can dislodge the clot.
- Do not use a straw.
- Rest, and keep your head elevated when lying down.
Pain and swelling
- Take pain relief as advised by your dentist and follow the packet directions.
- Use a cold pack against the cheek for 10-15 minutes at a time on the first day.
- Swelling often peaks around 48 hours before improving.
Eating and cleaning
- Soft, cool foods for the first day; chew on the other side.
- From day two, gently rinse with warm salt water after meals.
- Keep brushing your other teeth as normal.
Contact the practice if
- Bleeding does not settle with pressure.
- Pain increases after day three rather than improving.
- You develop swelling with fever, or difficulty opening your mouth.
